Subject: Politics Watch: Banning Student Politics
Student Politics. The term itself is a source of confusion for me. So far, I know
Politics is open to all in any democratic society, and it doesn't matter whether
He is a student or a non-student. Anyone who has voting power can be involved.
with politics. There is no confusion. But here in Bangladesh, a new term has
been developed as "student politics." What is this? This is a political
wings of the national political party who act on behalf of all the students
of campus in any national issue. The student organization is under control.
of the national political party. We inherited the tradition of student politics.
from the period of early 60's (specifically student movement of 1962).
Though the language movement in the late 40's was the inauguration, in
60's it developed and get matured on the right shape.
I am not against or in favor of student politics. It should neither be
banned or patronized as it is now. But we must stop abusing our students.
under the name of politics. We have to do it for the sake of our future
generation. If it keep going on like this our educational sector will be
destroyed soon (already destroyed???).
Banning student politics is not a solution. Instead of that, we have to
concentrate on how our students can be more involved with their basic jobs.
Their basic job is to study. 80% of their time should be used for studying.
or study-related matters. The balance of 20% can be used for other things. When
Parents send their kids to school, college, or university, but they never
dreamt of their kids being political activists or leaders. As a mature
citizen He may have an interest in politics, as he is interested in sports.
music, films, etc. But that doesn't mean that he has to be engaged with that.
as a
full-time worker. Yes, it happened in our history many times when students
worked as a full-time political worker. Our students sacrificed their lives in
30's,
40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's for independent movement, language movement,
anti-autocracy movement, etc. Everywhere, they had a burning role.
But if you look at the current position of student politics, you will find a
sad picture. Students are out of politics. Non-students occupied all the
important positions. Universities have become a warfield of miscreants.
Politics has become a business name now. Polititian means a big
businessman (Is it because businessmen become politicians?) Huge investment
(Many million) is needed to be a parliament member. Imagine who will pay.
millions of dollars for public service? Are they all Haji Mohd Moshin? This
types of politicians abuse and keep abusing our students, which results in
current shape of student politics. Shouldn't we rescue our students from these
hells?
Instead of debating, one must go and ask the students of universities and
colleges, whether they want politics on campus or not. A statistic can be
taken by any government or public organization before taking the decision. I
I am sure most of the students will be against their politics in the
campus.
Needless to say, once our campus has an almost pollution-free policy
environment, and many talented politicians emerged from student politics.
But if we expect that environment at this time, we are living in fools.
paradise. Once Kashmir was a dream place for tourists, can anybody think
of traveling there now? Yes, adventurous people may dare to travel there.
But our parents don't send their kids to college or universities for
an adventure.
Who is dominating in the student wings of all the universities now? Please
Ask any student at any major university. How many of them are students or
regular student? How many non-students stay in the university halls? Who
supply arms to them? Why do they have to capture university halls? Anybody has
an answer to all these questions where there is a link with education?
Can anybody tell how many student organizations take initiative around the
year for a cultural program, a debate, sports, or any other social
activities that are closely related to their curricula?
I am afraid I am going the wrong way, in favor of banning student politics.
I didn't want to.
But at this stage, I have no other choice. To save the innocent student from
terrorism and other crimes, the campus must be politics-free. Due to the
For political reasons, universities should not close down for any single day.
Hartal and these types of activities should be stopped in all educational
institutions forever. We must remember those parents who sent their
children to the university to be educated citizens. They spend their hard
earned money for the education of their loving children. They are older than
99%. To respect their desire and ability, all the political parties have to
ensure the academic environment on campus. To be an educated person is
more important than to be a polititian.
Finally, I disagree on one point with the moderator. Bill Clinton and Hillary
Clinton's example is not comparable to our types of student politics.
They don't have student wings of political parties in their universities.
[Probably Bangladesh is the only country.]
Peace for all,
