ঢাকার হারিয়ে যাওয়া কামান : কালু জমজম

আওরংগজেবের বিশ্বস্ত সেনাপতি মীর জুমলা দুটো কামান বানিয়েছিলেন। একটা বড় কাটরার সামনের গেটের জন্য আরেকটা বড় কাটরার ভিতর স্থাপনের জন্য। একটা কামানের নাম দিয়েছিলেন “বিবি মরিয়ম” আরেকটা কামানের নাম দিয়েছিলেন “কালু জমজম” ঢাকার কালেক্টর ওয়াল্টার ১৮৩২ সালে বিবি মরিয়মকে বড় কাটরা থেকে নিয়ে চকবাজারে স্থাপন করেন। পরে তা সদরঘাটে স্থাপন করা হয়। ১৯৫৭ সালে ডি আই টির চেয়ারম্যান জি এ মাদানি কামানটাকে গুলিস্থানে স্থাপন করেন। গুলিস্তানের কামানটা আসলে সেই বিবি মরিয়ম। আর কালু জমজম? ওই কামানটা রাখা হয়েছিল বুড়িগঙ্গা নদীর তীরে। নদী ভেঙ্গে কামানটা নদীর গর্ভেই হারিয়ে যায়। টিকে থাকে শুধু বিবি মরিয়ম। ওটাই এখন গুলিস্তানের কামান নামে পরিচিত।

হারিয়ে যাওয়া কামানটি সম্পর্কে অষ্টাদশ শতকের দীন মোহামেদ লিখেছিলেন:

Provisions of all sorts are exceeding cheap and plentiful in Dacca: the fertility of its soil, and the advantages of its situation have, long since, made it the centre of an extensive commerce; it has still the remains of a very strong fortress, in which, a few years back, was planted a cannon of such extraordinary weight and dimensions, that it fell into the river, with the entire bank on which it rested; the length of the tube was fourteen feet, ten and a half inches, and the diameter of the bore one foot, three and one eighth inches: it contained two hundred and thirty-four thousand four hundred and thirteen cubic inches of wrought iron, weighed sixty-four thousand four hundred and eighteen pounds avoirdupoise, and carried a shot of four hundred and sixty-five pounds weight.
